Category-Based Express Entry Draws: What We Know in 2025

Canada’s Express Entry system has continued to evolve, and as of February 2025, category-based draws are now a well-established part of the selection process. Introduced in 2023, these draws allow IRCC to target candidates with specific skills and work experience rather than relying solely on Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) scores.

EXPRESS ENTRY

So far in 2025, IRCC has prioritized candidates in key labour shortage areas, including:

  • Healthcare

  • STEM occupations (science, technology, engineering, and math)

  • Trades (such as electricians and plumbers)

  • Transport (including truck drivers and aviation personnel)

  • Agriculture and agri-food

  • French-speaking candidates

The federal government determines the selection criteria for category-based draws based on labour market needs. These targeted draws give candidates in high-demand occupations an advantage, even if their CRS score is lower than the general draw cutoff.

However, traditional CRS-based draws continue to occur, particularly for Federal Skilled Worker, Canadian Experience Class, and Federal Skilled Trades applicants. Express Entry candidates should pay close attention to general and category-based draws to maximize their chances.

For those considering Express Entry in 2025, having work experience in an in-demand field can significantly boost the likelihood of receiving an invitation to apply (ITA). Staying informed about upcoming draws and ensuring your profile is optimized for both CRS and category-based selection will be key to success.
